The second album by Animal Collective co-frontman Avey Tare—discounting his Slasher Flicks project—detours from the bright, experimental pop of his day job into pleasant, meandering psychedelia. As with Animal Collective, the music here feels both natural and synthetic, intuitive but avant-garde, dressing simple, catchy songs—“Jackson 5,” “Ms. Secret”—with layers of effects, samples, and field recordings. The result is a kind of wet-weather sonic garden in which strange growth thrives.
