Levon Helm – Ramble At the Ryman (iTunes Version)

Published: Feb 2, 2012 by Jay Sean Filed under: Albums Rock iTunes AAC + FLAC iTunes Albums
Every week at his Woodstock home and studio, Band drummer Levon Helm entertains folks with his Midnight Ramble. It’s a casual, intimate show that features Helm with his band and a variety of guests. He’s brought his ramble to the road and this recording is from his performance at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium during the fall of 2008. Multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell leads the band. This set features guests Sam Bush, Sheryl Crow, John Hiatt, and Buddy Miller. The tracks range from Band classics, “The Weight,” “The Shape I’m In” and “Chest Fever” to New Orleans-style R&B versions of “Back to Memphis,” “Fannie Mae” and “Baby Scratch My Back.” His voice is in surprisingly good form. Helm beat throat cancer, but his voice has become even more ragged but right over the years. There’s a downhome authenticity to the performances here. The sawing of the fiddle during “Anna Lee,” the deep country of “No Depression In Heaven” and the rockabilly-meets-Appalachia of “Time Out for the Blues” are in a world of their own.

Halestorm – Halestorm (Bonus Track Version) (iTunes Version)

... the lyrics are extremely redundant, and while I know this will draw some ire from fans, they're just kinda crybaby. I hate to say that, too, but after hearing a tune or two, I bought the whole album and realized that the sound is fine. The lyrics are painfully repetitive. Yeah, we get it, a man done you wrong, and he'll suffer for the loss. Only one tune stays away from the classic whiny moonmaiden you done me wrong, you evil man theme, and none of them are listenable a second time. As a footnote, the drummer lacks any style or flash at all, merely pounding away the same old drums until the whining ends. Great sound. Crap lyrics. Weak rhythm section.

Saosin - 3 Albums + 3 EPs + 5 Singles (iTunes Version)

Published: Feb 1, 2012 by Jay Sean Filed under: Albums Rock iTunes AAC + FLAC iTunes Artists
California-based Saosin burst onto the post-hardcore scene in March 2003 with their explosive screamo-tinged debut EP, Translating the Name, on Death Do Us Part. For the recording, the band was comprised of vocalist Anthony Green, drummer Pat McGrath, guitarist/vocalist Justin Shekoski (ex-As Hope Dies), and former Open Hand members bassist Zach Kennedy and guitarist/vocalist Beau Burchell. The band's name comes from a Chinese proverb that means "small heart," as in love cautiously. Shortly after the EP's completion, Kennedy exited (going on to join Ashlee Simpson's band) to be replaced by Chris Sorenson, and since McGrath had been enlisted solely to play drums on the album, Saosin weren't solidified until that July with the addition of permanent drummer Alex Rodriguez (also formerly of Open Hand).

Silverstein - 7 Albums + 1 EP (iTunes Version)

Published: Feb 1, 2012 by Jay Sean Filed under: Albums Rock iTunes AAC + FLAC iTunes Artists
Originally formed in 2000 as a side project, Silverstein was launched by vocalist Shane Told, guitarist Josh Bradford, drummer Paul Koehler, guitarist Richard McWalter, and bassist Bill Hamilton in Ontario, Canada. After diving into Ontario's hardcore/emo scene — which also included bands like Moneen and Grade — Silverstein found an audience for its particular brand of shimmering emo and hot-blooded post-hardcore. The band's self-released EP, Summer's Stellar Gaze, was quite well received upon its release in 2000, and soon Silverstein became the full-time project of its members. After a lineup change that saw McWalter being replaced by ex-Maharahj guitar player Neil Boshart, the band began to tour the eastern provinces of Canada in earnest.
